Departmental Purpose

The Facilities Management Department maintains operations for buildings and grounds of all college owned properties excluding the Berea College Forests. There are approximately 1.6 million square feet of building space, 120 acres of land on campus and 80 acres off campus that are maintained for the campus community. This includes all academic, residential and rental properties. Routine repairs and maintenance are performed on a planned, organized and scheduled basis and includes preventative maintenance activities. This program is in effect at all times to prevent more costly repairs and maintenance.

Maintenance and Repair Requests

Requests for daily routine repairs and maintenance should be made directly to the Facilities Management office at CPO 2202, by fm_work_orders@berea.edu, through iService Desk, or call extension 3827. Facilities staff serves as the owner representative for all capital projects working closely with architects, contractors and vendors. The Facilities Management Department is located next to the student parking lot on Walnut Meadow Road.

Emerson College’s Facilities Management Department is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Emerson’s buildings and grounds. It also provides the Emerson community with preventive and corrective services. The Department of Facilities Management is located at 120 Boylston Street, Suite 411. The Facilities Management Department responds to work orders (see below) placed by Emerson students, faculty, and staff for preventive and corrective services.

To put in a ticket for a work order, you must sign in to our system using your ECNet username and password.

The Facilities call center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an emergency work order request, please call (617) 824-8880, or contact the Emerson. Be sure to state the urgency of your request when calling in an emergency situation. In the event of a maintenance emergency, also contact an RA, RD, or desk assistant immediately. Requests for lock changes and anything regarding furniture movement must be made directly to the RD.

The College of Estate Management (CEM) is an independent educational charity founded in 1919 offering a range of courses relating to construction, property and estate management.

CEM's relationship with the University of Reading stems from an association that began in 1967 when the University became a validating body for the college. Since 1973, the College has been based in the URS building on the Whiteknights campus.

The College of Estate Management and the University have now agreed a plan which will see CEM pursue the awarding of its own degrees. This will involve the withdrawal of the University's validation for the College's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes over time.

The two institutions have enjoyed a strong and productive relationship since the 1960s and have, as part of recent discussions, explored the potential for a merger of the two organisations. However, both institutions now believe the time has come for each to build on its own strengths. This will be best achieved as strong and autonomous institutions and will ensure there is clarity relating to the respective brands, markets and programme provision in those markets.

For existing students whose courses are currently validated by the University of Reading, there will be no change in validation arrangements. Meanwhile, the College will continue to work closely with the University to ensure that new validation arrangements are fully in place as the University progressively withdraws from its validation role on behalf of the College.

ERP System Examples

Let’s start with the question, what is an ERP system application? According to Wikipedia, “Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems integrate internal and external management information across an entire organization. ERP systems automate this activity with an integrated software application. Their purpose is to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders.”

Primarily a system for manufacturers (although there are many other broad-based information systems marketed as ERP in other industries), ERP is available from a wide range of vendors in a number of different forms to fill the needs of all types and sizes of manufacturing companies.

ERP solutions can be categorized in a number of different ways—by the size of the solution or the market share of the supplier; by the specific vertical industry that the system is designed to support; or according to the technology platform it runs on.

By Size

The two “800 pound gorillas” of ERP system examples are SAP and Oracle, with the most market share—between the two taking in about half of the total dollars spent on ERP. Next in line, and there are differing opinions about actual revenue and relative position, are Microsoft (Dynamics GP and Dynamics AX), Infor (SyteLine, VISUAL, and a number of other solutions), CDC, Epicor, IFS, QAD, Consona, and many more.

By Technology

In years past, there used to be a significant division in ERP solutions based on the operating environment (hardware / operating system / database) in which they functioned. Much of that distinction has disappeared or become irrelevant with the near universal adoption of web-based architecture and Windows or browser presentation layer and user interface. Nevertheless, ERP solutions can be categorized by server platform and database, although many solutions can be implemented in several environments. For example, there are versions of SAP’s products that operate on mainframe systems, UNIX or Windows/Intel platforms. Many of Infor’s products use the IBM Systemi (AS/400) platform and integral DB2 database (Infor XA, Infor LX, Infor Prism, Infor System21) but other Infor products reside on WinTel platforms (VISUAL, Syteline).

Probably the most significant technology differentiator is database system but here again many products will work with a choice of databases, most often Oracle or SQLServer (Microsoft). Many ERP buyers prefer to limit the number of technology suppliers they want to deal with, simplifying the support and maintenance tasks. Microsoft is the winner in those accounts as companies almost inevitably standardize on Microsoft Office products, prefer the Microsoft SQLServer database, and gravitate toward an “all Microsoft” solution including the platform for their ERP system.

By Industry

There are two major divisions in terms of industry applicability, with many products adding capabilities to “bridge the gap” and serve both markets. Initially, ERP evolved in support of the “discrete” side of manufacturing—companies that deal with hard goods fabricated and assembled from individual parts. The “process” side of manufacturing, working with materials and products that are or contain liquids and powders (materials and products that pour) felt left out and eventually got their own ERP solutions specifically designed to support their needs. More recently, discrete-oriented ERP solutions continue to add process capabilities (the ability to handle “recipes”, potency, continuous processing schedules, product grading, etc.). Examples of process industry solutions include Infor Prism and CDC Ross ERP.

Specific industries benefit from ERP solutions designed to support industry-specific needs. Examples include Encompix for engineer-to-order manufacturing; Axis for metals, wire and cable; Cimnet for printed circuit board manufacturing; DTR for plastics manufacturing; and Relevant for Department of Defense contractors.

ERP software design

Application architecture is the science of designing an application to achieve certain goals such as performance and scalability. We know that an ERP application consists of data entry forms, business rules, validations, menus, security routines and other data access routines.

Partitioning the application by grouping all the entities logically based on certain guidelines is application design resulting in Application Architecture. The benefits of such design are:

The performance of the application is better, the applications will be scalable by being able to incorporate future requirements
By partitioning an application into logical groups also called as layers results in a cohesive code. Such cohesive code is preferred because similar type of code are placed together and can be managed easily
The layered based approach provides abstraction allowing modifications at one level without impacting or with minimal impact on other layers

Accordingly four layers are developed for the ERP software. They are Data Layer, Data Access Layer, Business Layer and Presentation Layer

Presentation Layer

In the Presentation Layer, the code responsible for displaying user interface of the entire application is located.

The common code placed in this layer are windows forms, web forms, user controls and server controls. Examples are data entry forms for the finance module, data entry form for the manufacturing module and similarly for all other modules. Note that Windows Forms are used for client interaction in desktop applications and web forms are for browser-based interaction.

Also note that an application developed based on the layered approach includes code for interaction between different layers. The code which provides interaction between the presentation layer and business layer is located in this layer.

Basic validations which are implemented at the user interface level are also located in this layer. Some examples are checking for blank fields, negative numbers and valid dates etc.

Business Layer

In the Business Layer, the code that implements the business functionality of the application is located. The business logic of an ERP application is implemented by using components.

Business components encapsulate the business logic, also called business rules. These rules constrain the behavior of a business concept to match the needs of a particular company. For example, the business rule that determines whether a given expense account can be allowed a certain amount is encapsulated in the related component of the application.

Business processes are the activities that occur in a business. Examples are Order Processing, Bill of Materials, Issue of Work Order, creating Invoice etc. These business processes are encapsulated in the business components.

One business component may interact with one or more business components to implement a business process. These business processes can be implemented using either c# or vb.net.

The Business Layer also includes code responsible for accessing the Data Access Layer to retrieve, modify and delete data to and from the data layer and move the results to the presentation layer.

Data Access Layer

The Data Access Layer provides access to databases such as SQL Server, Oracle etc. The .NET technology used to provide data access functionality is ADO.NET. The ERP application we are developing accesses data stored in the Sql server database, which is a relational database.

The code in this data access layer exposes the data stored in the database to the business layer.

Data Layer

Data Layer is the database or the source of the data. The popular databases are SQL Server, Access database and Oracle or can be XML. In the data layer, always use stored procedures.

It is strongly recommend that you use stored procedures for everything you can. We recommend Stored procedures because they are fast and easier to modify. For example, if you need to extract data from two tables instead of one table, you can do that by modifying the relevant stored procedure. The NET application code need not be changed.

NOTES ON SCHOOL MANAGEMENT

SCHOOL MANAGEMENT" is in the minds of those most concerned a somewhat uncertain term. The course often given in normal schools and colleges under that name varies greatly in content. It is next to the course in "methods" in degree of variability. In many cases it is very specific, and when there is an attempt at general statement the result is none too successful. In our texts on the subject there is a range from books of rules to idealistic visions of harmonies. One of our great committees wrestled with the subject, somewhat as an aside, but from every standpoint there is an opportunity for good work still to be done in this field.

One of the difficulties has been that we are not clear as yet as to the foundations of the internal government of schools. Are they to be democratic or monarchical in organization? The principles worked out in general government, and having reference there to immediate participation by adult males only, rightly or wrongly, are considered by many inapplicable to an institution so largely, as far as daily routine is concerned, now in the hands of young women. Then, too, the massing of numbers of pupils makes the government forms of the home out of place in the school, and raises the question as to the extent to which these children and young people can function in the organization which exists to aid them in their growth.

The reports written by some of the city superintendents, and such works as Mrs. Young's Isolation in the School, are the most promising material-that we have. Our need is more discussions which take a large view of the school as a growing organism working out its own statement of function. We have much petty self-consciousness so far, but little of the large consciousness which makes for progress in an economical manner.

The self-government movement, while often a fad, indicates an appreciation of collective interests which will contribute much of permanent value. The recognition which we find of school housekeeping," as a part of the published school curriculum even for older students, will also help. The best teachers have always recognized the need of placing responsibility where it rightly belongs, but we are coming now to a larger recognition of what this means.

The higher training of teachers will before long make a number of strides forward. At present it is still hard to learn how to use school tools without at the same time becoming mechanical. The training systems make it hard to foster individual excellence. The result is two classes of teachers, a large number of one class forgetting the weightier matters in their devotion to the really valuable things that they have learned, while the greater number of the other class are hampered in realizing the vision they follow because no man has helped them to overcome the little difficulties which will not be ignored. Smaller training centers, in closer relation to actual conditions, with more efficient supervision there and later, promise to help us.

The College Bus Management System Project in java is being developed to provide a tool for the different colleges to easily maintain the college bus information. The system will give an effective output for the Java & Microsoft excel given as input to the system. The compiled java program given as input to the system, after scanning the program will generate different reports.

At the start of the project setup, Microsoft Access provides an interactive part to store information about buses; different routes of buses, student information, and bus pass etc.

During the period of finalizing the idea of the system, the primary goal was to design the system i.e. those who don’t know how to handle the software. As designing work began and things started taking shape, the system got developed to a stage where it would be used by entry level

In the existing system Colleges have to manually maintain information regarding College buses and routes. Information relating to student passengers and bus passes have to be maintained separately.
