If you haven’t seen Google’s plans for
their new Mountain View campus, you have to check out the video that Google
released detailing the plans. The new campus is being designed by a
collaboration of Bjarke Ingles Group (BIG) and the studio of Thomas
Heather wick.
The
Google campus will contain approximately 3,000 employees once complete. In
total, the project is about 600,000 square feet of office, research and
retail space. The google campus plan is currently under review by the
city.
Upon visiting Silicon
Valley, BIG and Thomas Heather wick took note of 2 main factors: 1) Google’s
strong presence in the valley and 2) the vast amount of parking lots. The
two architects wanted to create a space that is a reflection of Google but that
embraces and compliments the natural surroundings. “Google’s presence in
mountain view is simply so strong that it can’t be the fortress that shuts away
nature that shuts away the neighbors. It really needs to become a neighborhood
in Mountain View.”- Bjarke Ingles.
The design of the new
campus seeks to integrate nature and community with the workplace. The goal is
for the new building to be flexible for more than just the next 10-15 years.
Google and the two collaborating architects are creating a truly innovative
space, never seen before. A piece of glass fabric draping across what looks
like tent polls will blur the outside world with the inside world.
