What is Social Media? Why would I use it?
Social Media tools are tools that allow for social interaction and easy creation of content by users. Examples of popular Social Media tools are Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Wordpress and Pinterest.
Social Media can be an effective tool for teaching and learning in higher education. It can help connect students to information and help them generate a dialogue with their teacher and other students about a course. It can also help students and faculty build professional networks that connect them to communities beyond the U of S.

Tips for educators using social media

Do’s

  1. Do use separate personal and professional social media accounts. Putting a boundary between school and personal life is good for your career and less stress on you.
  2. Do make sure you have strict privacy settings and review those settings frequently. Especially if you use one social media account per site.
  3.  Do follow these suggested guidelines for teachers and social media.

Don’ts

  1. Don’t say anything on your social media profile that you wouldn’t say in class.
  2. Don’t get too chatty with students on your professional profile. This may confuse students into thinking you’re available 24/7 for this, that and the other. Be available, but keep it professional.
  3. Don’t share too much. Personal pictures from your weekend soiree have no business being on your professional profile.

Implementing Social Media Into the Classroom:

The opportunities for social media use are virtually endless. While there are many different social media platforms, most are very user-friendly and require little front-end work. Some ideas for implementing common social media platforms include:

Social Media in Teaching and Learning
Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Flickr, as well as open social practices such as blogging, are being used in learning for the purpose of convenient communication with other students and potentially with others outside the class such as students of the same topic and subject experts. Many social media, as commercial endeavours, are attractive in that their features often surpass those of internal firewalled environments. The fact that these media are generally open to the world implies a need to carefully consider the risks of openness as well as need for ongoing communication with students in order to address their concerns and deal with issues in the use of social media as they arise. These risks are counter-balanced by the benefits of open discussion and academic debate in authentic online environments.
Many teachers use private networks like Edmodo, where postings are not visible to the general public. Other teachers use Facebook or Twitter to connect their students to peers and experts outside the classroom. Applications like Twijector can project Twitter streams (organized by hashtag) onto classroom walls. Students can create a live, interactive stream by Tweeting questions, clarifications, or responses about a topic.
Hashtag searches on Facebook or Twitter can link classroom discussions to broader social conversations, helping students see how their learning relates to real-world applications.
It is essential for teachers to remember that their actions on a public social network may be visible to students, parents, school districts and the media. It is in their best interest to use social media and privacy settings responsibly.
To get started using social media in teaching, consider what you want to achieve.
  1. Do you wish to help students with their writing or reflection? Encourage or assign them to begin a blog. Wordpress is a simple blogging platform used by many at the University of Leicester.
  2. Do you wish to help students discover and discuss the very latest in breaking news and issues? Encourage them to use Twitter, and to tweet using a hashtag # identifying your course. The case study of Paul Reilly in Media and Communications, below, is a good example.
